Elk - Species at Yellowstone
Great populations of Elk are found in Yellowstone, where the animals are monitored and studied. These are the most abundant large mammals found in the Park and their population is estimated at about 30 thousand species. The number is greater in summer, whereas in winter months, the Elk prefers northern lower-elevation parts of the park. So, climate is a very important factor in regulating the Elk population.
Earlier, it was believed that the species is detrimental for vegetation and its activity provokes erosion. Controlled hunting regulated the Elk population, so did trapping and park rangers. Research was conducted to determine the factors that influence the Elk population and what affect the species has on nature.
The research did not show any evidence that Elk have dreadful effects on the feeding sites and the population is self-regulating. However, there are some issues that are waiting to be clarified. Thus, it is not clear yet what effects ungulate grazing brings to aspen and willows.
Meanwhile, Elk in Yellowstone are abundant and allow studying them in detail. Thus, it was established that the worst enemies of the Elk are the grizzly bear, coyote, black bear, and golden eagle. These predators are believed to ruin about 32% of Elk calves yearly.
