The herd of these animals is usually led by a female though during a mating season, a male will form harems consisting of 20-30 females. Males are solitary creatures; they live alone or in small groups. Calves live with females.

Females of these animals live longer than males; females’ average life span ranges from 19 to 21 years while males live average for 16 years in the wild.
