There usually the only one calf is born; its coat is reddish brown and it is usually born in April after the period of gestation of 250 days. The young are nursed for several months by their mothers and stay with them fro a year or two.

These animals feed mainly on aquatic plants and the young shoots; the animal usually active in the morning and evening. The females are usually together with their young and the males are solitary animals. The animals mate in the autumn and there are battles among the males over the females.
