The first settlers valued Elk for their fur and meat, so the species has always been a good target for hunters. Nowadays, they are considered as pests since they damage trees and agriculture when feeding. Elk can be bred and are an attractive breeding stock since they provide meat, velvet, and are a good attraction for tourists.

A considerable number of associations are formed to help breeders and wild life lovers learn more about the reproduction and life cycle of the Elk. Such organizations are a good source of information concerning the habitat and habits of the species, management, and protection ways.

Elk - Diet

Elk feed on grasses, trees, forbs, and woody growth. Violets, clover, mushrooms, and some other foods are their favorites. Feeding occurs in the early morning and late in the evening. Elk are inactive at daytime and at night.

Elk - Habitat

The species is found in open woodlands as they avoid dense forests. They also live in coniferous swamps and clear cuts. The home range of the Elk is about 600 square miles. Elks are not strictly territorial and can be seen fighting only during a mating season.

Elk - Status in the Wild

The Elk was nearly extinct in the 19th century due to extensive hunting and agriculture development. However, due to efforts by individuals and special conservation programs, the population of the Elk was reestablished. In fact, Elks are abundant now and are the subject to controlled hunting.
